Additional Taxes
What Is Form 1040 Schedule 2?
Form 1040 Schedule 2, Additional Taxes, asks that you report any additional taxes that can't be entered directly onto Form 1040. The 2024 Schedule 2 Instructions are not published as a separate booklet. Instead, you will need to read the Schedule 2 line item instructions found inside the general Form 1040 instructions booklet.
On page two of IRS Form 1040, line 17, the taxpayer is asked to add the amount from Schedule 2, line 3, Tax. Then on line 23, the taxpayer is asked to add the amount from Schedule 2, line 21, Other Taxes. Part 1 and Part 2 of the Additional Taxes schedule combines the less frequently used income tax types onto one form.
Form 1040 Schedule 2, Additional Taxes, was created as part of the Form 1040 redesign implemented for the 2018 tax year. You do not file IRS Schedule 2 with the older 1040 series forms such as Form 1040A or Form 1040EZ. Schedule 2 can only be attached to Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, and Form 1040-NR.

When to File Schedule 2
Schedule 2 is filed with your Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, or Form 1040-NR when you owe additional taxes that are not included directly on the main form. These additional taxes may include the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), excess advance premium tax credits, or other additional taxes related to self-employment, household employees, or retirement distributions. Form Schedule 2 is typically due by April 15th, unless you file for an extension, which may give you until October 15th to submit.
For detailed information on when to file, refer to the IRS instructions for Schedule 2. The Schedule 2 instructions provide specific details on which additional taxes must be reported and how to accurately calculate them.
Where to Mail Schedule 2
If filing electronically, form Schedule 2 will be submitted with your federal income tax return. For paper filing, attach Schedule 2 to your Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, or Form 1040-NR and mail it to the IRS address that corresponds to your state, as indicated in the IRS instructions for Form 1040. Notice that Attachment Sequence No. 02 appears in the upper right of the Schedule 2 form. Make sure all the necessary forms and schedules are included and mailed to avoid any delays in processing your tax return. Always double-check the mailing address and, if possible, use certified mail to track delivery.
Common IRS Schedule 2 Mistakes to Avoid
If you make a mistake or calculation error on Schedule 2, you may need to file Form 1040X (Amended US Individual Tax Return) to correct it. Be sure to update any forms that are affected by the changes to Schedule 2 when filing an amendment.
