Illinois state income tax Form IL-1040 must be postmarked by April 15, 2024 in order to avoid penalties and late fees. Printable Illinois state tax forms for the 2023 tax year will be based on income earned between January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023.

What is Illinois Form IL-1040?
Illinois Form IL-1040 is used by full-year residents, part-year residents, and nonresidents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form IL-1040 is to determine your tax liability for the state of Illinois. Nonresident and part-year resident filers are also required to complete Illinois Schedule NR.
The State of Illinois does not have an Easy Form (EZ) or Short Form.

Do I have to file an Illinois tax return?
You must file an Illinois tax return if you were required to file a federal income tax return. There is also an income test for those who were not required to file a federal income tax return. You must file an Illinois tax return if your Base Income (line 9) exceeds your total Exemptions claimed (line 10). For tax year 2023, Single residents under the age of 65 must file if their income is more than $2,425. Married residents with no dependents must file if their income is more than $4,850.
Even if your Base Income is below the amount specified for the total exemptions claimed, you may still want to file an Illinois tax return. You may receive a refund for the state tax amount shown on your Illinois W-2, for example. You may also be eligible for any Illinois earned income credit or other low-income related credits.

How to pay estimated taxes in Illinois?
Illinois Form IL-1040-ES is used to pay estimated taxes. If you have taxable income from self-employment, interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, and pensions, you may have to pay estimated tax to the state of Illinois.
Download Illinois Form IL-1040-ES from the list of forms in the table below on this page. The computation worksheet and instructions for Form IL-1040-ES can be found inside the PDF file. The last page of the Illinois 1040-ES file contains the fillable voucher for the 2024 tax year. Open the PDF file and print the two pages of the form. Then, fill in and mail to the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Illinois estimated income tax payment due dates are the same as the federal Form 1040-ES payment due dates. For the 2024 tax year, estimated tax payments are due quarterly on the following dates: April 15, 2024; June 15, 2024; September 15, 2024; and Jan 15, 2025.
