What Is Kentucky Form 740?
Kentucky Form 740 is used by full-year residents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of KY Form 740 is to determine how much state income tax you owe. Part-year resident and nonresident filers must complete Kentucky Form 740-NP instead of Form 740. Residents of the reciprocal states Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin might qualify to file Form 740-NP-R if they had Kentucky income tax withheld and had no other income from Kentucky sources.

Who Must File Kentucky Form 740?
Most Kentucky residents must file a state income tax return if they are required to file a federal income tax return. However, a gross income threshold is used to determine if you have to file a Kentucky return. Your filing requirement depends primarily upon your family size (one, two, three, four, or more) and modified gross income ($15,060, $20,440, $25,820, $31,200). The 2024 Kentucky Form 740 instructions include Chart A and Chart B, which help determine if you have to file.
Even if you are below the filing threshold, you could still benefit from filing. You might receive a refund of any Kentucky tax withheld on your W-2, for example. Kentucky also offers certain credits, including a Family Size Tax Credit and a limited state Earned Income Credit (KEIC). Check your eligibility for these and other refundable credits before deciding not to file.
