What is New Jersey Form NJ-1040?
New Jersey Form NJ-1040 is used by full-year and part-year residents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form NJ-1040 is to determine your tax liability for the state of New Jersey. Nonresident filers will complete New Jersey Form NJ-1040NR. Part-year residents may be required to file both Form NJ-1040 and Form NJ-1040NR.
The State of New Jersey does not have an Easy Form (EZ) or Short Form.

Do I have to file a New Jersey tax return?
You must file a New Jersey tax return if your gross income exceeds the minimum specified for your filing status. For tax year 2023, Single residents must file if their gross income is more than $10,000. Married residents must file if their gross income is more than $20,000.
Gross income means all income before deducting expenses that is reportable to the state of New Jersey. Even if your gross income is below the amount specified for your filing status, you may still want to file a New Jersey tax return. You may receive a refund for the state tax amount shown on your New Jersey W-2, for example. You may also be eligible for any New Jersey earned income credit or other low-income related credits.

How to pay estimated taxes in New Jersey?
New Jersey Form NJ-1040-ES is used to pay estimated taxes. If you have taxable income from self-employment, interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, and pensions, you may have to pay estimated tax to the state of New Jersey.
Download New Jersey Form NJ-1040-ES from the list of forms in the table below on this page. The computation worksheet for Form NJ-1040-ES can be found inside the instructions PDF file. Pages one and two of the New Jersey 1040-ES file are the fillable vouchers for the 2024 tax year. Open the PDF file and print the two pages of the form. Then, fill in as instructed and mail to the State of New Jersey Division of Taxation.
New Jersey estimated income tax payment due dates are the same as the federal Form 1040-ES payment due dates. For the 2024 tax year, estimated tax payments are due quarterly on the following dates: April 15, 2024; June 15, 2024; September 15, 2024; and Jan 15, 2025.

State of New Jersey Division of Taxation asks that you wait 10 days before checking the status of an electronically filed return and 12 weeks for a mailed in paper return.
