Preparation of your Georgia income tax forms begins with the completion of your federal tax forms. Several of the Georgia state income tax forms require information from your federal income tax return, for example.
If you have not done so already, please begin with your federal form 1040. Remember that federal tax forms 1040EZ and 1040A have been discontinued. Seniors age 65 and older have the option of filing federal form 1040-SR this year.
What is Georgia Form 500?
Georgia Form 500 is used by full-year, part-year, and nonresidents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form 500 is to calculate how much income tax you owe the state. Taxpayers with simple returns have the option to use GA Form 500EZ, Short Individual Income Tax Return.
In general, any full-year resident can choose to file Long Form 500 instead of Short Form 500EZ. You do not have to file the Short Form, for example. You must, however, use Georgia Form 500 if any of the following apply to you.
- You are 65 or over, or blind.
- You were a part-year resident or nonresident.
- Your filing status is Married Filing Separate, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow.
- You had income other than wages, salaries, tips, dividends, and interest.
- You claim exemptions other than yourself or spouse.
- You itemize deductions.
- You have adjustments to Federal Adjusted Gross Income.
- Your income exceeds $99,999.

Do I have to file a Georgia tax return?
You must file a Georgia tax return if you were required to file a federal income tax return. There is also a gross income test for those who were not required to file a federal income tax return. For tax year 2023, Single residents under the age of 65 must file if their gross income is $8,100 or more. Married residents under the age of 65 must file if their gross income is $14,500 or more.
Gross income means all income before deducting expenses that is reportable to the state of Georgia. Even if your gross income is below the amount specified for your filing status, you may still want to file a Georgia tax return. You may receive a refund for the state tax amount shown on your Georgia W-2, for example. You may also be eligible to claim the Georgia Low Income Credit, Child and Dependent Care, Disabled Person, Qualified Caregiving, Disaster Assistance, and other credits.
