When Are Taxes Due?

Federal income taxes for the 2024 tax year are due April 15, 2025. US individual income tax return Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR must be e-filed or postmarked on or before this date to avoid penalties and late fees. Most state income tax returns are also due on the same day.

Individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton, and some areas affected by recent flooding may have until May 1, 2025 to file their federal returns and make tax payments.

When Are Estimated Tax Payments Due?

Quarterly estimated taxes are generally paid by individuals who file Schedule C, Schedule F, and Schedule SE. Income from alimony, interest and dividends, rental real estate, royalties, and other types of income may also require estimated tax payments. The first estimated tax payment is due on April 15, 2024. Each quarter a federal estimated tax payment is due.

Here are the estimated tax due dates for the 2024 tax year:

  • April 15, 2024
  • June 17, 2024
  • September 16, 2024
  • January 15, 2025

You can pay quarterly estimated taxes online. If you pay by mail, each estimated tax payment should be postmarked on or before the quarterly due date to avoid penalties and late fees. Please read the Form 1040-ES instructions for more information.

What Happens If I Miss The Due Date?

If you can not complete your annual income tax return before the April 15, 2025 filing deadline, you are generally expected to mail in an extension of time to file request form and make a payment if you expect to owe taxes. You can then send in your income tax return up to 6 months late with interest and possibly penalty charges forthcoming.

Remember that you must notify and pay both the IRS and your state Department of Revenue (DOR) office. The Internal Revenue Service will not notify your state and tell them that your state tax return will be late.

What If I Don't Have The Money To Pay Taxes?

If you do not have the money to pay your income tax due amount, then, you generally must file your income tax return without a payment. Once the IRS has processed your income tax return, you can request a payment schedule from them by mail-in form or by phone.
