What Is Iowa Form IA 1040?
Iowa Form IA 1040 is used by full-year residents to file their state income tax return.
The purpose of the IA Form 1040 is to determine how much state income tax you owe or if you are due a refund.
Part-year and nonresident filers must file Iowa Form IA 1040 and include Schedule IA 126.
The state of Iowa does not currently offer a short form for individuals.

Who Must File Iowa Form IA 1040?
According to the 2024 IA 1040 Instructions, you must file an Iowa tax return if your gross income exceeds the minimum amounts for your filing status. Single filers must file if their gross income is more than $9,000. Married filers must file if their gross income is $13,500 or more. The gross income thresholds are much lower if you are a nonresident or part-year resident, or can be claimed as a dependent. Gross income generally means all income before expenses and deductions taxable by the State of Iowa.
Even if your income is below these thresholds, you may still want to file. You could receive a refund of any Iowa income tax withheld on your W-2. Iowa also offers an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child and Dependent Care Credit, and other refundable credits.

How do I check my Iowa tax refund?
To check the status of your Iowa income tax return online, visit the Iowa Department of Revenue website and use their Where's My Refund service. To check the status of your Iowa income tax return for 2024, you will need the following information:
- Social Security Number
- Tax year
- Amount of refund requested
The requested information must match what was submitted on your 2024 Iowa Form IA-1040. You can also look up prior year returns if you have the requested information available. If not, you will need to contact the Iowa Department of Revenue service center by phone or mail.
