Indiana state income tax Form IT-40 must be postmarked by April 15, 2024 in order to avoid penalties and late fees. Printable Indiana state tax forms for the 2023 tax year will be based on income earned between January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023.

What is Indiana Form IT-40?
Indiana IT-40 is the form used by full-year residents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form IT-40 is to determine your tax liability for the state of Indiana. Nonresident and part-year resident filers will complete Indiana Form IT-40PNR instead.

Do I have to file an Indiana tax return?
You must file an Indiana tax return if your gross income exceeds your total exemptions claimed. For tax year 2023, Single residents must file if their gross income is more than $1,000. Married residents with no dependents must file if their gross income is more than $2,000. Add to your exemptions total $1,000 for each child or elderly dependent who lives with you.
Gross income means all income before deducting expenses that is reportable to the state of Indiana. Even if your gross income is below the amount specified for your total exemptions claimed, you may still want to file an Indiana tax return. You may receive a refund for the state tax amount shown on your Indiana W-2, for example. You may also be eligible for the Indiana earned income credit.

How to pay estimated taxes in Indiana?
Indiana Form ES-40 is used to pay estimated taxes. If you have taxable income from self-employment, interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, and pensions, you may have to pay estimated tax to the state of Indiana.

Indiana estimated income tax payment due dates are the same as the federal Form 1040-ES payment due dates. For the 2024 tax year, estimated tax payments are due quarterly on the following dates: April 15, 2024; June 15, 2024; September 15, 2024; and Jan 15, 2025.

Indiana Department of Revenue asks that you wait three weeks before checking the status of an electronically filed return and 12 weeks for a mailed in paper return.
