What is Minnesota Form M1?
Minnesota M1 is the form used by full-year residents to file their state income tax return. The purpose of Form M1 is to determine your tax liability for the state of Minnesota. The State of Minnesota does not have a M1 Easy Form (EZ) or M1 Short Form.
Nonresident and part-year resident filers will also complete Minnesota Form M1. Nonresident and part-year resident filers must include Schedule M1NR with their state income tax return.

Do I have to file a Minnesota tax return?
You must file a Minnesota tax return if you were required to file a federal income tax return. There is also a gross income test for those who were not required to file a federal income tax return. For tax year 2023, Single residents under the age of 65 must file if their gross income is $13,825 or more. Married residents under the age of 65 must file if their gross income is $27,650 or more.
Gross income means all income before deducting expenses that is reportable to the state of Minnesota. Even if your gross income is below the amount specified for your filing status, you may still want to file a Minnesota tax return. You may receive a refund for the state tax amount shown on your Minnesota W-2, for example. You may also be eligible to claim the Minnesota Working Family, Dependent Care, K-12 Education, and other refundable credits.

How to pay estimated taxes in Minnesota?
Minnesota requires that you either pay online or create a printable voucher online to pay estimated taxes. If you have taxable income from self-employment, interest, dividends, unemployment compensation, and pensions, you may have to pay estimated tax to the state of Minnesota.

Minnesota estimated income tax payment due dates are the same as the federal Form 1040-ES payment due dates. For the 2024 tax year, estimated tax payments are due quarterly on the following dates: April 15, 2024; June 15, 2024; September 15, 2024; and Jan 15, 2025.

Minnesota Department of Revenue states that it can take up to 30 days to process an income tax refund. To reduce the processing time, select the direct deposit option.
