Printable MI-1040 Tax Forms and Instructions
What Is Michigan Form MI-1040?
Michigan Form MI-1040 serves as the primary document for filing state income tax returns in Michigan. Individuals who meet the state's filing requirements, including full-year residents, part-year residents, and nonresidents with Michigan-sourced income, must use this form. The form calculates your state income tax liability based on your residency status and income.
Part-year residents and nonresidents will complete Michigan Schedule NR to apportion income earned within the state.
This ensures that only Michigan-sourced income is taxed appropriately.

Who Must File Michigan Form MI-1040?
According to the Michigan MI-1040 instructions, you must file a Michigan tax return if you file a federal income tax return. You must file a return even if you do not owe any Michigan income taxes. This requirement helps reduce unnecessary correspondence with the Michigan Department of Treasury.
There is also an income test for individuals who did not file a federal income tax return. You must file a Michigan tax return if your adjusted gross income exceeds your total exemption allowance. For tax year 2024, the following income thresholds apply:
- Single residents under the age of 65 must file if their income exceeds $5,600.
- Married residents with no dependents must file if their income exceeds $11,200.
Even if your adjusted gross income is below the specified exemption threshold, you may still want to file a Michigan tax return. Filing may allow you to claim a refund for state tax withheld on your Michigan W-2. You may also qualify for the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit or other benefits, such as the Homestead Property Tax Credit.
