What Is Hawaii Form N-11?
Full-year residents use Hawaii Form N-11 to file their state individual income tax return.
The purpose of Form N-11 is to calculate how much Hawaii income tax you owe for the year.
If you are a part-year resident or nonresident, you must file Hawaii Form N-15 instead of Form N-11.
Some Hawaii residents with simpler returns may qualify to file the short form, Hawaii Form N-13.

section of the 2024 Hawaii N-11 instructions to determine whether you should file Form N-11, N-13, or N-15.
Who Must File Hawaii Form N-11?
If you are a full-year resident of Hawaii and are required to file a federal income tax return, you will typically need to file Form N-11. In addition, you must file if your Hawaii gross income exceeds the threshold published in the 2024 N-11 instructions for your filing status. For 2024, single filers under age 65 must file if their gross income is $5,544 or more. Married filers under age 65 must file if their gross income is $11,088 or more. The threshold amounts are higher or lower depending on your residency, age, disability, and filing status. Gross income generally means all income before expenses and deductions other than income specifically exempt from state taxes.
Even if you are under the threshold, you may still want to file if you had Hawaii income tax withheld and are due a refund. Hawaii offers several refundable credits, such as the Credit for Low-Income Household Renters, Refundable Food Tax Credit, and Credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses, among others, that might increase your total refund amount.
