Virginia Income Tax Rate 2023 - 2024
Virginia state income tax rate table for the 2023 - 2024 filing season has four income tax brackets with VA tax rates of 2%, 3%, 5% and 5.75% for Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, and Head of Household statuses. The Virginia tax rate and tax brackets are unchanged from last year. Virginia income tax rate and tax brackets shown in the table below are based on income earned between January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023.
Outlook for the 2024 Virginia income tax rate is to remain unchanged. Several bills were introduced and failed recently to adjust state income tax brackets and rates. One such bill introduced the idea of replacing all four Virginia tax brackets with a single flat income tax rate of 5.75%.

Virginia Tax Brackets 2023 - 2024
Looking at the tax rate and tax brackets shown in the tables above for Virginia, we can see that Virginia collects individual income taxes similarly for Single versus Married filing statuses, for example. We can also see the progressive nature of Virginia state income tax rates from the lowest VA tax rate bracket of 2% to the highest VA tax rate bracket of 5.75%.
For single taxpayers living and working in the state of Virginia:
- Tax rate of 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable income.
- Tax rate of 3% on taxable income between $3,001 and $5,000.
- Tax rate of 5% on taxable income between $5,001 and $17,000.
- Tax rate of 5.75% on taxable income over $17,000.
For married taxpayers living and working in the state of Virginia:
- Tax rate of 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable income.
- Tax rate of 3% on taxable income between $3,001 and $5,000.
- Tax rate of 5% on taxable income between $5,001 and $17,000.
- Tax rate of 5.75% on taxable income over $17,000.
For the Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, and Head of Household filing statuses, the VA tax rates remain the same. Notice also that the Virginia income tax brackets for Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household, and Married Filing Separately are all the same for the state of Virginia.
