Hawaii Income Tax Rate 2023 - 2024
Hawaii state income tax rate table for the 2023 - 2024 filing season has twelve income tax brackets with HI tax rates of 1.4%, 3.2%, 5.5%, 6.4%, 6.8%, 7.2%, 7.6%, 7.9%, 8.25%, 9%, 10%, and 11% for Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, and Head of Household statuses.
Effective January 1, 2018 the top three income tax brackets of 9%, 10%, and 11% were reinstated. The Hawaii tax rate and tax brackets for 2023 are unchanged from last year.
Hawaii income tax rate and tax brackets shown in the table below are based on income earned between January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023. Outlook for the 2024 Hawaii income tax rate is for the top rates and number of tax brackets to continue at their current levels.

Hawaii Tax Brackets 2023 - 2024
Looking at the tax rate and tax brackets shown in the tables above for Hawaii, we can see that Hawaii collects individual income taxes differently for Single versus Married filing statuses, for example. We can also see the progressive nature of Hawaii state income tax rates from the lowest HI tax rate bracket of 1.4% to the highest HI tax rate bracket of 11%.
For single taxpayers living and working in the state of Hawaii:
- Tax rate of 1.4% on the first $2,400 of taxable income.
- Tax rate of 3.2% on taxable income between $2,401 and $4,800.
- Tax rate of 5.5% on taxable income between $4,801 and $9,600.
- Tax rate of 6.4% on taxable income between $9,601 and $14,400.
- Tax rate of 6.8% on taxable income between $14,401 and $19,200.
- Tax rate of 7.2% on taxable income between $19,201 and $24,000.
- Tax rate of 7.6% on taxable income between $24,001 and $36,000.
- Tax rate of 7.9% on taxable income between $36,001 and $48,000.
- Tax rate of 8.25% on taxable income between $48,001 and $150,000.
- Tax rate of 9% on taxable income between $150,001 and $175,000.
- Tax rate of 10% on taxable income between $175,001 and $200,000.
- Tax rate of 11% on taxable income over $200,000.
For married taxpayers living and working in the state of Hawaii:
- Tax rate of 1.4% on the first $4,800 of taxable income.
- Tax rate of 3.2% on taxable income between $4,801 and $9,600.
- Tax rate of 5.5% on taxable income between $9,601 and $19,200.
- Tax rate of 6.4% on taxable income between $19,201 and $28,800.
- Tax rate of 6.8% on taxable income between $28,801 and $38,400.
- Tax rate of 7.2% on taxable income between $38,401 and $48,000.
- Tax rate of 7.6% on taxable income between $48,001 and $72,000.
- Tax rate of 7.9% on taxable income between $72,001 and $96,000.
- Tax rate of 8.25% on taxable income between $96,001 and $300,000.
- Tax rate of 9% on taxable income between $300,001 and $350,000.
- Tax rate of 10% on taxable income between $350,001 and $400,000.
- Tax rate of 11% on taxable income over $400,000.
For the Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, and Head of Household filing statuses, the HI tax rates and the number of tax brackets remain the same. Notice, however, the Hawaii income tax brackets for Married Filing Jointly doubles from $2,400 to $4,800 at 3.2%, and doubles from $200,000 to $400,000 at 11% the highest tax bracket. Married Filing Separately income tax brackets are one half that of the Married Filing Jointly income tax brackets in the state of Hawaii.
