Illinois Tax Amnesty Program Forgives Penalties And Interest On Delinquent Income Taxes

Illinois Revenue, 2019 Illinois Tax Amnesty Program.

Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) recently announced the opening of their tax amnesty program for unpaid taxes owed to the Illinois Department of Revenue. If you have unreported, underreported, or unpaid individual or business taxes due to the State of Illinois, you can apply for amnesty yourself or with the help of a tax preparer.

Unreported means that you did not file Illinois Form IL-1040 along with the required schedules for one or more prior years, for example.

If you received a notice from the IDOR stating that your tax liability is eligible for this tax amnesty program, call the number on that IDOR notice for more information. If you have not been contacted by the Illinois Department of Revenue, this is your chance to self-report and avoid all penalties and interest due.

Illinois tax amnesty DOES NOT apply to the following tax types:

  • taxes not collected by the IDOR;
  • property tax;
  • franchise tax;
  • insurance taxes;
  • local taxes paid directly to the local government;
  • International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA);
  • Motor Fuel Use Tax (MFUT); and
  • licensing, tire, motor, permits and other fees.

In order to complete your prior year Illinois tax forms, you may first need to complete your federal tax forms. On our site you can download printable copies of Form 1040, Form 1040A, and Form 1040EZ for prior years. Non-resident filers can download printable copies of Form 1040NR and other state tax forms.

Visit the official Illinois Tax Amnesty website for instructions and the forms you will need to apply. If you have an existing income tax liability, hurry to prepare your forms. You are required to pay in full between October 1, 2019 through November 15, 2019. This is a great opportunity to settle any unpaid Illinois income tax.
