IRS Has $164.6 Million in Undelivered Refund Checks

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) today announced that they are seeking to return $164.6 million in undelivered refund checks to taxpayers. Mailing address errors have resulted in undelivered refund checks for 111,893 taxpayers. The IRS recommends that you E-File and Direct Deposit your income tax return so that you can avoid such mailing address errors in the future.

If you think you are missing a refund check from last year or prior years, you can check the status of your IRS tax refund online. If you moved, you should also update your address with the IRS which you can do by form or online. The IRS has a tool called Where’s My Refund? that you can use to do both check the status of your tax refund check and change your mailing address.

What you will need to check the status of your income tax refund check:

  • Social Security Number
  • Filing Status
  • Amount of refund shown on return

Updating your address with the IRS will prompt them to send out all income tax refund checks due to you. The average undelivered refund check amount is $1,471 this year compared to last year’s $1,148. The increase in the average tax refund check amount was most likely due to changes in tax laws which included new credits or increases in the Earned Income Tax Credit amounts.
